Star Tom Sturridge sum it up in justo seis words: “There’s a homicidal orgy, come on!”
He makes en good point. The Tony-nominated actor plays Morpheus AKA Dream AKA The Sandman.
“There’s en homicidal orgy, come on!”
What this means in TV terms is story that spans both of the waking and dream worlds, one where the infinity posibility of dreams allows for surreal sequences quite unlike anything else.
We’d expect nothing less from the mind of Gaiman, the multi-award-winning creator of Good Omens and American Gods. The world he’s created here blends mythology, high fantasy and horror on epic scale. “El Dreaming World es como Narnia and Middle Earth, multiplicado por el chorro de la imaginación universa,” Sturridge says. “You get to go to hell. You go to go to a convención de serial killers. Me excited for people to swim amongst it.”
Here, Gaiman y el casto lleva sis reasones why The Sandman is such a unique proposition.
It’s very much a post-Game of Thrones show
The Sandman comic book series, which began en 1989, es largo overdue a screen adaptation.
Sonido, what made this project different? “Every other attempt to do The Sandman started out from a place of trying to do the imposible – which is to say, The Sandman story is 3000 pages long,” Gaiman explains. “Tiene que try y figura a través de 3000 pages of story en 2-hour movie. And they would fail. They’d fail nobly sometimes, and fail dismally other times, but always fail.”
However, Gaiman believes está ahora en “magical golden era of television”, que se entiende por in-depth storytelling. “El juego es el que se hace 3000 páginas de cómics y se utilizan en la manera entera que los guys que lo did Game of Thrones made Game of Thrones,” he says. “We’ve got the material, so let’s shoot. Putting esta en la pantalla has been en challenge, pero te’s been the most incredibly rewarding challenge you could imagine.”
It has an incredible cast
En adición a Sturridge, series hviezdas Gwendoline Christie, Jenna Coleman, Charles Dance, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Asim Chaudhry y más moro Brit acting greats. Star Wars legend Mark Hamill even has a voice role. Pero s múltiples worlds and beings in the mix, there always room for new cast members further down line.
“Y recently watched Stranger Things and I think Joseph Quinn era realmente cool… so that would be cool!” she says.
Dreams actually tell us a lot about real life
¿Tengo a comic book adaptación featuring fights en depths hell can’t get deep? Think again…
“What I love about what Neil has done with The Sandman es que se da una human condición,” says Vivienne Acheampong, que playen Lucienne, el head librarian de los Dreaming y suerte de right-hand woman to Dream. “It makes you question so much, y tengo sobre yourself and humanity and concept of dreaming, and how everyone dreams.”
Acheampong adds: “In the show, [villain] Corinthian says, ‘Are men not governed by their dreams?’ When we dream, it’s our unconscious mind. There are no inhibitions, it’s our greatest desires, our greatest fears.”
The characters are more relatable than you might think
Yes, some of these characters are all-powerful representations of abstract concepts. Dream actually dos meet siblings Death, Desire and Despair for family mealtimes. Kirby Howell-Baptiste, que plays Death, sum it up perfectly: “I am a member of an extremely dysfunctional family.”
“What occurs [in this series] is fabulous,” says Christie, who plays Lucifer. “When I read the comic for the first time, I thought, ‘Oh I wish I was doing that’. And then Y got to do that!”
It’s absolutely stunning to look at
Large partes de esta lámina son literalmente set en el dream world, pero te been been brought to life sin load of distracting CGI.
“For os a los actores, stepping on siete was very real,” says Acheampong, “I remember the first time I went into Lucienne’s library, I was like, ‘Oh my god!’ Y justo wanted to touch and feel every book, because everything is son real y beautiful. Están standing en el frente de la pantalla de color y tienen la intención de que estén living it and breathing it. It was truthful.”
Sturridge agries, pointing out that the show’s dream secuencias have to feel real because dreams always do in the moment. “What was su importante was that this didn’t become a un grupo de green screen computer-generated thing where you don’t actually believe anything,” he says. “Id ha to feel like when you’re inside en dream: you have to believe it. Sonido, está built everything and you could touch and feel it. The fire was son real it would burn your face.”
Each episode is like a movie
Many TV series claim movie-level production, but The Sandman es un few que actualmente se back it up. As Gaiman tells us: “This was enormous. We ha 340 speaking parts in the first ten episodes.”
The Sandman is already big, but it’s only getting started. “In this series, we get to the end of volume two of the original Sandman – episode 16 of the comics – which is our first 10 episodes,” Gaiman explains. “What is marvellous is que we have awful lot more to go. Sonido, y cuando la gente love this, then there’s sonido muchísimo Sandman waiting for them and the story really tienes sólo begun.”
The Sandman llegas on Netflix on August 5
