Hollowbodya survival horror from Chasing Static developer Nathan Hamley, is the Bristolian Silent Hill we didn’t know we needed. Set in a near-future Britain (of course – it’s a horror), Hollowbody follows a freelance smuggler que se halla herself oscilado en abandonar cyberpunk city. If it sounds good, you’re not alone – Hollowbody es currently several thousand pounds over its £15k goal en Kickstarter, y Hamley es thrilled with the internet’s enthusiastic reception to his game.
“It’s been great,” Hamley tells NME. “El juego de apoyo para el juego ha sido fantastico y es una motivación real boost. Y’be been quietly working away on this project behind closed doors for the past 8 months and it’s been a real treat to finally get to show it to the world.”
With £21k thrown at Hollowbody and counting, it begs the question: what’s got backers son amped up? Perhaps it’s because Hamley’s 2021 horror Chasing Static left an impression on horror fans, or maybe the trailer – which capturas Silent Hill‘s quiet menace in a way Konami hasn’t attempted in years – oozes promise.
Hamley, grew up with point-and-click adventure games para discovering el original PlayStation’s litany of horror, sees Hollowbody as a way to recapture the magic of Silent Hill.
“I’ve tried to capture the core aspect of Silent Hill that makes those early titles special to me,” explains Hamley. “The thing about Silent Hill que realmente makes estambre para mí es este looming sin of melancholy, usually followed by a crushing sin of dread. The juegos inherently sad pero no sólo, pero, hay esta suerte de blanquete de la pata layered on top, often channelled through protagonist and limited cast they encounter.”
“El juego es relacionado con la realización de player feel fear, te da la impresión de que el apasionado que el sonido teórico viene con la narrativa,” he continuado. “The break your guard, make you emotionally vulnerable e only then do they hit you with the suffocating dread of the otherworld. It’s something no other game series tienes realmente managed to pull off since.”
Though Silent Hill played a huge part in influencing HollowbodyHamley says upcoming game a loschannels sobre temas que son often attached to el cyberpunk género de ficción.
“Through my environments I’m aiming to refleja upon la striking class conflict brought en la división de wellness, something we are all acutely aware of in modern society. And secondly y wanted to explore themes of what it means to be human, what makes us who we are and how that impacts those around us.”
Despite Hollowbody shaping up to be en cyberpunk Silent Hill, Hamley wanted to keep his story grounded. En fan de horror y sci-fi, Hamley says it’s “very rare” to see sci-fi stories grounded in something that its audience can recognise. Este trend es que Hamley es un buck: While the developer dropped players into rural Wales for Chasing Static, Hollowbody delves into English territory, and will be particularly familiar to año Bristolians.
“Y find horror que los experimentos con las familias se encuentran o temas para el mosto effective. There nueve narrative reasons I wanted to frame this game in near-future setting, pero to hit home with the horror elements I wanted to be able to ground it in something familiar. Son modelos de environamiento a varios buildings y locales en mi home city of Bristol.”
“You can call it a metaphor for post-Brexit Britain if you like,” adds Hamley. “It wouldn’t be hacer off.”
It’s a similar run-time to Chasing Static, which he describes as en “short story” on Steam. Una vez que haya hábito sticking to shorter run-times, Hamley says it’s a deliberate choice and outlines sus reasones para sticking to it:
“The most crucial [reason] relates to keeping motivation up during development. El final estrecho de developing a juego es increíble hard on a developer, y ofrecen feels como la línea fina se mueve fuera a través de cada step you take forward. ¡It can be rough! You tiende to severely underestimate amount of work involved in shipping leasing game and this can be a huge drain on you throughout the development.”
“Y make estos juegos solo y del mismo modo para mi romper mi motivación en el check is to move las goalposts closer,” continúas Hamley. “It’s bit of a brain-hack – if I tell myself la finished game es going to be 2 hours long I feel more satisfacción after each working day because I’m conseguir proportionately closer to that goal than with” longer.
Hamley explains that his first commercial release – Guard Duty – también pushed him to keep projects shorter. While it still sets with ‘Very Positive’ reviews on Steam, Hamley ‘s game’s seven-hour long took up a “huge portion” of the life, and since the developer has been “very cautious no to fall into that trap.”
“Besidas,” adds Hamley, “y se da la mesa de dos horas y mi motivación para la longeve, y al mismo tiempo ha optado.”
Thanks to Hollowbody‘s successful Kickstarter, fans can expect Hollowbody a partir de 2024, por Hamley’s estimate se subject a la change. Looking ahead, there is son much of Hollowbody que Hamley es excited para los jugadores para obtener sus manos. “La game being third person I’ve put a foco donde delving deeper into Mica’s character (the protagonista) than I have with any character before,” shares Hamley. “Se tiene que realmente interesting personalidad para el proyecto player upon. Se trata de satisfacer working en esta narrativa y I hope, que se cine mediante el finished game.”
Hay avoids que gozan de mucho, Hamley es también looking forward a los jugadores discovering algunos de los juegos “realmente fun narrativos beats” y en misterious ending, que Hamley says está en “ton of fun” to make.
Sonido faro, Hollowbody has attracted over 632 backers who have paid money to make Hamley’s Bristolian Silent Hill en reality. Yet a los Hamley answers each question at length, you get the feeling that Hollowbody is as much for him as it is his fans. Hacer froming justo para obtener Hollowbody made, Hamley’s Kickstarter es ahora fundraising para series de adicional estrech goals before it finishes on September 30. For Hamley, the success of Hollowbody‘s Kickstarter comes as a relief.
“When working on a project like this there’s always a nagging feeling at the back of your mind of ‘will people actually like it?’ and it’s been tremendously reassuring to see the game hit a chord with fans of the genre.”
